The Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre (BCPCC) is seeking a highly motivated early-career Pathologist to join its multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing pancreatic cancer care through integrated clinical practice and translational research.
The successful candidate will play a key role in bridging diagnostic pathology with cutting-edge research, contributing to biomarker discovery, precision oncology, and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. A significant component of the role includes active participation in biobanking operations, supporting high-quality biospecimen collection and annotation to enable impactful research.
This role suits a pathologist certified in Portuguese or holding a Portugal-valid license who is just starting their career and has a keen interest in academic medicine, translational oncology, and working collaboratively on research projects.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Diagnostic Activities
- Contribute to the diagnostic evaluation of pancreatic and gastrointestinal pathology.
- Support integrated histopathological, cytological, and molecular interpretation of cases and sign out the combined molecular pathology reports.
Translational Research & Innovation
- Engage in clinical and translational research projects focused on pancreatic cancer.
- Collaborate closely with clinicians, surgeons, oncologists, and basic scientists within the Centre.
- Contribute to study design, protocol development, and ethics submissions.
- Support biomarker discovery, molecular profiling, and data integration initiatives.
- Prepare scientific publications and present research findings at international conferences.
Biobanking & Biospecimen Science
- Support the development and day-to-day management of pancreatic cancer biobanking activities.
- Coordinate biospecimen collection, processing, storage, and quality control.
- Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and institutional standards, including GDPR.
- Maintain accurate clinical annotation and integration with research databases.
- Contribute to the implementation and optimization of SOPs for biospecimen handling.

Skills / Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements
Medical degree with specialization (or near completion) in Pathology.
Certification by the Portuguese Medical Association (Ordem dos Médicos) or eligibility for registration in Portugal.
Early-career profile (recent specialist or final-year resident in Pathology)
Strong interest in pancreatic cancer and translational oncology.
Basic knowledge of molecular pathology and research methodologies.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
Fluency in English; proficiency in Portuguese required.
Desirable Qualifications
Previous involvement in oncology-related research or publications.
Knowledge in biobanking, tissue-based research, or molecular techniques (e.g., NGS, IHC).
Familiarity with digital pathology and image analysis platforms.
Intention to pursue a PhD or structured research training.

About Us
The Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre is a state-of-the-art facility comprising research laboratories, a day hospital, a surgical centre, as well as inpatient and intensive care facilities. The mission of the Botton- Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre is to develop new and effective treatments for pancreatic cancer. To accomplish this goal a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, clinicians, clinical trials specialists, cancer scientists, genomics experts and computational biologists work together to deliver world-leading outcomes for patients with pancreatic cancer.
The Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre is also closely integrated with the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown. Members of the Champalimaud Research Programme (CR) and the Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC), work together to investigate fundamental biological processes and search for effective solutions to alleviate the burden of oncological, neurological and mental diseases, while providing state-of-the-art care to the patients of the CCC. With 479 members, including group leaders, postdocs, PhD and MSc students, research technicians and highly specialised research staff, the CR community encompasses 39 nationalities. Within the Lisbon Ocean Campus, CF will expand its research, technological development, innovation, and clinical practice in the digital therapeutics field.
